BBC – Portland House

About

Imperial Engineering were engaged by TMT to deliver the complete electrical installation package for the fit-out and refurbishment associated with the BBC Portland House in Digbeth Birmingham.

Our scope was the electrical alterations associated with the CAT B fit out changing from an office space into studio spaces. This required repurposed and redesigned lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarms, containment systems and small power.

We delivered containment for a resilient infrastructure tailored for production, broadcasting and technical operations, enabling the BBC team to operate with confidence and flexibility.

Challenge

Delivering an electrical package suited to a broadcast environment, with stringent technical, health & safety constraints, posed several challenges.

The infrastructure needed to support high-density data wiring, backup power supplies, differing lighting colour temperatures to support specific editorial tasks, emergency lighting suitable for studios and public areas, and advanced fire & security systems aligned to broadcast-studio standards.

Building within a media facility meant detailed planning of containment, shutdown windows, power phasing, and coordination with the BBC technical team and TMT to ensure continuity.

Our proactive planning, close collaboration with TMT and a flexible, skilled installation team ensured we met the programme, delivered to specification, and handed over a top class facility ready for the next phase of operations.
